Lawrie And Taylor Pick Up Top Dawg Awards

Softball's Danielle Lawrie and men's golfer Nick Taylor were presented with the 'Top Dawg' Award last Friday to highlight the UW's annual Student-Athlete Graduation Reception.

Lawrie and Taylor, both seniors, each won national player of the year awards in their respective sports in 2010 as Lawrie picked up both the ASA/USA Softball Player of the Year and the Honda Award for softball while Taylor earned the Ben Hogan Award.

The reception, held last Friday at the Conibear Shellhouse, was emceed by Bailey Stenson, a graduating senior from the Husky softball team, and included presentations from a number of head coaches and a number of awards.

Fullback Paul Homer from the football team and Lindsey Kirschman, a member of the track & field team, were presented with the Gertrude Peoples Postgraduate Scholarship. The award, named in honor of the founder of the UW's original Student-Athlete Academic Services program, provides scholarships for post-graduate studies.

Pac-10 Postgraduate Scholarships were presented to Homer, rower Erin Knox, golfer Christina Yoon, and Zach Midles from track & field.

UW associate vice president Gabriel Gallardo and Alejandro Espania from the university's Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity delivered their department's Scholar-Athlete Award to Falesha Ankton from the track team.

Dr. Pat Dobel, who is the UW's Faculty-Athletic Representative gave out the Academic Excellence Award to two student-athletes, rower Matthew Mackinnon and gymnast Karen Cain.

Finally, the Top Dawg Award, given to the male and female student-athletes who have demonstrated the highest caliber of athleticism, academic achievement, service, leadership and moral character, was presented by senior associate athletic director Stephanie Rempe to Lawrie and Taylor.
