Three Bears Square Off in Futures-National Team Doubleheader
June 17, 2010
CANTON, Ohio - With former Cal softball letterwinner Vicky Galindo suiting up for the U.S. national team and current Golden Bears Valerie Arioto and Jamia Reid in blue for the Futures national team, it was the battle of the Bears in Wednesday evening's doubleheader between the two national squads.
Galindo and her senior team emerged the victors in both games, triumphing, 5-0 in game one and 7-0 in the second stanza with all three members of the Cal softball program getting on the field in front of the 4,128 fans in attendance. Galindo has vast experience with the national team, winning silver with the squad at the 2008 Beijing Olympics as well as gold at the 2005 and 2007 Pan-Am qualifiers. Wednesday's doubleheader was the first appearance for Arioto and Reid with the Futures team, which derives its name from the talent that could make up the women's senior national team in years to come.
'It was a great experience for me,' Jamia Reid said. 'I was nervous and excited at the same time. The crowd was very big and the atmosphere was amazing. I am just glad I have this opportunity to play with and against the best. Both teams are great.'
In the first game of the summer season for the national team, Arioto notched the first hit of the game with a single to center off of two-time Olympian Jennie Finch. In that game, Galindo was utilized as a pinch runner and came around to score one of the five runs for the senior team. Arioto started at first while Reid started in left and grabbed a steal.
Galindo, who started at second in the later game, gave the U.S. national team an insurance run with an RBI single to bring the tally to 5-0 in the third inning. Reid served as a pinch runner, stealing another base, while Arioto stepped in as the designated player.
The two teams will face off again in another doubleheader on Thursday evening in Ashland, Ohio.
