Baxter Up for Outland
June 21, 2010
DALLAS--University of Arizona senior center Colin Baxter has been named to the watch list for the prestigious Outland Trophy.
Baxter, a senior from Rolling Hills, Calif., is the leader on UA's front line, expected to be one of the Wildcats' strongest units in 2010. He has started 37 consecutive games, with 11 of those coming at left guard in his fredshirt freshman year and early 2008. He was a second-team All-Pac-10 pick in 2009.
UA defensive tackle Rob Waldrop won the Outland Trophy in 1993. It has been presented annually since 1946, and is the third oldest award in major college football. The trohpy is named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at Penn and Kansas at the turn of the century.
The award is presnted to the nation's top interior lineman on offense or defense. Ends are not eligible. The Greater Omaha Sports Committee and the Football Writers Association of America present the honor.
Baxter joins six Pac-10 players on the watch list -- tackle Bo Thran of Oregon, DT Lawrence Guy of ASU, DT Stephen Paea of Oregon State, DT Jurrell Casey of USC, center Chase Beeler of Stanford and center Kris O'Dowd of USC. Also, candidates from three eventual Pac-10 schools are on the list -- tackle Nate Solder of Colorado, center Zane Taylor of Utah and guard Ryan Miller of Colorado.
Arizona begins fall camp Aug. 5, with the season opener Friday, Sept. 3, at Toledo in a game to be televised by ESPN at 5 p.m. MST. Tickets for Arizona football home games may be purchased online through the ticketing tab on this site's home page.
