Do and Kono Advance with First Round Victories at USWAPL

June 23, 2010

UCLA sophomores Brianna Do and Stephanie Kono each advanced with victories in the first round of match play at the 34th U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks Championship at The Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame University.

Freshman Tiffany Lua fell 3 and 1 in the first round to Victoria Fallgren of Lakewood, Calif.

Both Do and Kono won by identical 1-up margins. In Do's case she went 2-up at the 11th hole with a par, only to lose that lead on the next hole with a bogey. Do and her opponent, Kristina Wong of Vestal, NY, then halved the next six holes giving Do her win.

Kono never trailed in her match, but nearly lost a 3-up lead after making a birdie at the par three 11th. A bogey at the 12th and one at the 15th saw her clinging to a 1-up lead. She halved the last three holes with her opponent, Soohee Moon of Mukilteo, Wash., to advance to the next round.

All square at the 13th, Lua lost three of the next four holes in her setback.
