Holmqvist, Halbig Qualify for British Ladies Amateur Match Play Championship

California Golden Bear women's golfers Daniela Holmqvist and Pia Halbig made it through qualifying at the British Ladies Amateur to secure a spot in the 64-player Match Play Championships in Yorkshire, England.

The British Ladies Amateur began with a two-day, 36-hole qualifying round to trim the field of 144 competitors, made up of the best amateur golfers in Europe, to 64 player who will continue competing in the Match Play Championship.

Daniela Holmqvist, an upcoming junior at Cal, finished in the top-20, ranking at No. 14. Holmqvist began the qualifying tournament with a first round 73, ranking her fifth after the opening round. She shot a 77 on the second day, finishing at four-over and in 14th place once the ties were decided. Holmqvist carded an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole. She also birdied the par-5 13th hole on her back nine. Holmqvist and the rest of her teammates from Sweden finished second in the team title with the team from Spain earning the team title honors.

Pia Halbig, who will begin her senior season as a Bear in the fall, followed up her opening round 78 with a second round 79 to finish 52nd and earning a spot in the Match Play field. Halbig had back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th holes.

Former Cal golfer Roseanne Niven, who finished her Golden Bear career in the spring, withdrew from the tournament and did not play in the second round.

On Thursday, the 14th-seeded Holmqvist will take on Fanny Vuigner of Switzerland, the No. 51 seed. Halbig, the No. 52 seed, will play against Scotland's Kelsey MacDonald, the No. 13 seed. The two Cal players narrowly missed being pitted against one another in the opening round of play. The tournament, being held at Ganton Golf Club, in Yorkshire, England, runs through June 26. In match-play format, the winner of head-to-head pairings advance in the tournament with the losing player eliminated. The match will continue through as many extra holes as are necessary until there is a clear winner between the two competitors.
