California Selected to Host 2012 NCAA Volleyball Regional
June 25, 2010
INDIANAPOLIS - The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) named the University of California as one of four regional championship hosts for the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship on Friday, June 25. Haas Pavilion will serve as a host site alongside arenas at Nebraska (Big Ten), Purdue (Big Ten) and Texas (Big 12) on the weekend of Dec. 7-8, 2012. The University of Louisville (Big East) and the Louisville Sports Commission will serve as hosts of the 2012 national championship at the Louisville Arena in Louisville, Ky., Dec. 13-15.
This is the first time the Golden Bears have been chosen as an NCAA regional championship host, but the volleyball program has hosted first- and second-round matches three times in the last seven years (2003, '04 and '08). Cal is just one of four teams (three-time defending champion Penn State, Texas and Nebraska are the others) to have advanced as far as the NCAA regional championship match in each of the last three seasons and has been to a school-record eight consecutive NCAA tournaments under head coach Rich Feller.
'This is a great honor for the Cal athletic department and our volleyball program,' said Feller. 'With our recent national success on the court and the support of our administration, I look forward to welcoming the volleyball world to our campus in 2012.'
The University of California will host the 2010 and 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Water Polo Championships and served as host of the 2008 NCAA Rowing Championships. Recently, Haas Pavilion was the site of the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Regional Championship that produced national runner-up Stanford. The Bears have also hosted numerous NCAA championship first- and second-round events in basketball, soccer and tennis as well as Pac-10 and MPSF conference championships over the years.
