Arizona's Schluntz Named ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America of the Year

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA's Justine Schluntz, a six-time national champion swimmer was chosen as the 2009-10 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America of the Year for the University Division, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced Thursday.

Schluntz was selected by collegiate Sports Information Directors from across the country from 12 candidates who had won their respective sport's CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American of the Year.

A native of Albuquerque, N.M., Schluntz earned a 4.0 GPA as a graduate student studying fluid dynamics. She earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Arizona last spring, graduating summa cum lade. She is the first swimmer to be named Academic All-America of the Year since the inception of the award in 1988.

Schluntz earned 16 All-American honors in her career as a Wildcat. She was a member of Arizona's record-setting 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay teams that own NCAA and American relay records. One of only 32 U.S. students to earn a Rhodes Scholar, Schluntz is set to study fluid dynamics at Oxford University next year.  She was named the 2010 Pac-10 Women's Swimming Scholar Athlete of the Year and Pac-10 Woman of the Year and is a candidate for the NCAA's prestigious Woman of the Year award.

Schluntz becomes just the third Pac-10 student-athlete to earn the honor of Academic All-America of the Year. Former Oregon cross country/track & field athlete Galen Rupp won the honor for the 2008-09 season and former Stanford football player Tommy Vardell was the recipient in 1991-92.

In the University Division, there are 12 Academic All-America teams selected annually- Men's and Women's Soccer, Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track, Men's and Women's At-Large, Football, Volleyball, Baseball and Softball. In each program, there is an Academic All-America of the Year. Those 12 winners were considered for the Academic All-America of the Year Award. Schluntz was picked from a field of 12 Scholar Athletes with an average GPA of 3.79.
