Locker Wraps Up Trip To New York City
June 29, 2010
NEW YORK - The East Coast tour wound down on Tuesday as Washington quarterback Jake Locker was introduced to members of the local media.
First up was a luncheon with reporters at O'Brien's Pub near Times Square, where the media had a chance to get more acquainted with Locker, along with athletic director Scott Woodward and associate athletic director O.D. Vincent. The event was well-represented from several major media institutions in the New York City area, and reporters asked Locker a buffet of questions regarding the upcoming Husky football season and his professional future.
Next on the agenda was a tour of Sports Illustrated, located high up the Time-Life Building in midtown Manhattan. The magazine first took Locker out in front of Radio City Music Hall to film a video segment to appear on their website. Then the group was whisked upstairs for a casual chat with various members of the magazine's college football division.
Finally, the Washington party headed to Newark Liberty International Airport for the long flight back home to Seattle. But Locker was thankful for the chance to visit New York for the first time in his life. Being amidst the skyscrapers and the constant energy of one of the world's biggest cities was definitely an experience.
'First it was a little overwhelming; it was a lot to take in and process right away. But it's a really exciting city to be in,' said Locker. 'There's a lot of history held in this city, which I really enjoyed.'
The trip began with dinner at a TriBeCa restaurant on Sunday night before the jet-lagged travelers retired to the hotel. Then it was an early wake-up call and a two-hour drive to Bristol, Conn., and the ESPN headquarters. There Locker was put through ESPN's 'Car Wash,' going through a variety of shows on different media platforms.
'For me, this was something I never thought I'd get the opportunity to experience,' Locker said. 'It was really, really cool to see ESPN and get a chance to meet everybody. They were very welcoming, very accommodating, easy to be around and easy to talk to. It was fun.'
