Washington State showed marked improvement last season in year two of coach Paul Wulff's rebuilding job and the Cougars figure to be even more improved this season after fielding a very young lineup last season. WSU returns eight starters on offense and hope a year's experience, and some better luck in the injury department, lead to improved results. QB Jeff Tuel showed great promise as a true freshman last year when healthy and junior Marshall Lobbestael has also seen plenty of action giving the Cougs some depth at quarterback. WR Jared Karstetter became a go-to receiver last year and four starters return on the offensive line led by OGs Zack Williams and B.J.Guerra.

Six starters return on defense with the strength of the unit being a fairly deep group on the defensive line led by DEs Travis Long and Kevin Kooyman. Some inexperienced players are going to need to step up at linebacker and in the secondary to better results for the defensive unit. Excellent punter Reid Forrest is a weapon for WSU.

The Schedule:

Washington State has a couple of challenging non-conference road games at Oklahoma State and SMU. The Cougar league home schedule is most attractive with USC, Oregon, Arizona, California and Washington all making the trip to Pullman.
