Arizona State's Ryan Whiting Named Scholar Athlete of the Year



WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Arizona State thrower Ryan Whiting has been named a 2010 Scholar-Athlete of the Year in Division I by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The award recognizes collegiate track and field's best in both athletics and academics.

Whiting has garnered numerous awards following a season in which he won all three NCAA events he entered (indoor shot put, outdoor shot put and outdoor discus). He was named Track & Field News' Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year while also being selected as one of three finalists for the Bowerman Award, the highest honor given to collegiate track and field student-athletes each year.

A civil engineering major at ASU, Whiting was selected as an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team honoree after being named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII First Team. Within the Pac-10 Conference, Whiting was selected Men's Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-Pac-10 Second Team.
