Buffs Start Strong At Time Trial

Sep 4, 2010

BOULDER - The University of Colorado cross country team got the 2010 season started on a good note with several top finishers at the CU Alumni/Open/Time Trial on Saturday morning at the Buffalo Ranch Cross Country Course on CU's South Campus.

Redshirt freshman Shalaya Kipp raced to a second-place finish in her first cross country race for the Buffs. (She earned All-American honors on the track as a true freshman with a fourth-place finish in the steeplechase in 2010.) Kipp finished the 5.8 kilometer course in 22 minutes, 11 seconds. She was one second behind Rachel Viger, a true freshman at CU who was running unattached. Viger's official time was 22:10.

"I felt like it went pretty well," Kipp said about her race. "We have a strong team. We all came out here and did what we were supposed to do. It's going to be an exciting year for everyone."

Several other redshirt freshmen women ran their first races for the Buffs. Diana George was seventh with a time of 22:15. Camille Logan finished eighth after clocking a time of 22:37. Staci Foster took 10th (23:09) and Kelly King was 11th (23:12). Senior Megan Burrell broke up that bunch with a ninth-place finish (22:53) and sophomore Courtney Bouchet was 12th, finishing in 23:23. Sophomore Liz Tremblay also ran in a CU jersey and was 18th overall with a time of 24:46.

In usual CU fashion, several of the Buffs' varsity runners did not run in the black and gold at the time trial. Sophomore Laura Tremblay finished the race third and junior Emma Coburn was fourth, both recording times of 22:11. Junior Katie Cumming and senior Laura Thweatt were fifth and sixth, respectively, with the time of 22:12.

On the men's side, redshirt freshman Brennan Lynch was the top uniformed Buff, finishing the men's 8k course in 26:31. Sophomore Joe Bosshard and junior Cameron Clayton finished fourth and fifth, respectively, also with the same time. Juniors Christian Thompson (sixth) and Andy Wacker (seventh) ran a time of 26:32. Sophomore Jonny Stevens placed 13th overall (27:42).

Lee Troop won the time trial in 26:01 and Dillon Shije was second overall with a mark of 26:29. Shije was running unattached.

"I am very pleasantly surprised that the women's group was about 30 seconds faster than a year ago," coach Mark Wetmore said. "And then pleasantly surprised with the men's race with Dillion Shije and Matt Biegner; they both made more steps with helping the team."

Biegner took 10th overall (27:04) and was also not in a CU uniform.

The next varsity race for the Buffs will be the 25th Annual Rocky Mountain Shootout on October 2. The men will start the meet at 9 a.m. and the women will follow at 9:45.

"We won't change anything," Wetmore said when asked about training the next month. "We will just go back to our foundation of work which we've been doing since we started a couple weeks ago."
