Jog For Jill on Sept. 12
On Sunday, Sept. 12, the second Jog For Jill 5K event, sponsored by the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation (BJALCF), will take place at Golden Gate Park at 4 p.m. The event is being held in honor of the late Jill Costello, a former coxswain on the California women's crew team who passed away on June 24 at the age of 22 after a year-long battle with stage IV lung cancer. All 27 Cal teams, Cal athletic department staff and the Stanford women's crew team will be involved in the event.
Costello, the 2010 Pac-10 Women's Rowing Athlete of the Year, graduated from Cal in May with a degree in political economy and was named to the Academic All-Pac-10 second team. While enduring 22 rounds of chemotherapy and 14 radiation treatments, Costello continued to train with the crew team last year. She coxed the varsity 8+ boat for the first time in her career at the Pac-10 Championships, leading the Golden Bears to a close victory over Stanford and clinching the team title for Cal. Costello also led the varsity 8+ to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Costello began working closely with the Addario Foundation after its first 5K event in Golden Gate Park last year. The foundation named Costello its Director of Awareness this past spring.
Her original goal was to raise $125,000 for lung cancer research through Jog For Jill, and the event has surpassed her goal with over $270,000 heading into this weekend.
