Sep 15, 2010

BOULDER - The University of Colorado volleyball team dropped its Big 12 opener in three sets to the University of Oklahoma on Wednesday night at the Coors Events Center. Set scores were 25-15, 25-23, 25-21.

The Buffs fall to 3-4 overall (0-1 Big 12) with the loss, while the Sooners improved to 9-3 overall (1-0 Big 12).

Sophomore Kerra Schroeder led the way for the Buffs with 11 kills, tying for the match-high with OU's Suzy Boulavsky. Richi Bigelow and Anicia Santos each added seven kills in the effort. The Buffs recorded 36 kills and hit .102 in the loss. The Sooners had 41 kills and a .212 attack percentage.

Schroeder picked up her second career double-double with 11 digs. Megan Beckwith led the team with a match-high 12 digs. As a team Colorado had 44 total digs compared to 49 for the Sooners.

At the net, Santos posted seven blocks, one solo and six assists, another match-best. The Buffs put up 10.0 team blocks, besting Oklahoma's 7.0.

"You have players that are really showing glimpses of promise and hope and the idea is that they recognize that and they start to have continuity and start putting two of those together and then three and that's how really high level experience comes to pass," head coach Liz Kritza said. "You have a couple points in each match or each practice and then the frequencies of those increase and then all of the sudden they turn around and look back and they think, 'Wow, we've come a really far way.' But individual progress is something we really place great value on and we look for it in everything that we're doing with these young players."

The Buffs took a 5-2 lead to start the first set before the Sooners put together a 7-1 run to take a 9-6 lead. CU took three of the next four points to cut the OU lead to one point (10-9) before the Sooners took the next four straight. The Buffs tried to battle with OU, but were unable to string together runs to make a dent in the score and eventually fell 25-15. Colorado hit just .023 in the set while the Sooners amassed a .321 attack percentage.

CU took an 8-3 lead in the second frame before the Sooners tied it up at 10. The two teams kept the set close not allowing either to take more than a two point lead until OU went up 22-19. The Buffs fought back to get within a point at 22-23. OU took the following point to get to match point, but a kill from Santos kept the set alive for CU.  The Sooners finished the set off with a kill on the next point to win the set 25-22. The Buffs hit better in the set (.194) and held the Sooners to a .171 hitting percentage.

Colorado got out to a 12-7 lead in the third set, but the Sooners soon pulled ahead at 15-14 after a 7-2 run. OU went up 21-16 and the Buffs cut the lead to two points at 22-20. The Sooners closed out the set 25-21. CU was held to a .118 hitting percentage while OU hit .186.

The Buffs will be on the road in Lincoln, Neb. for their next match as they will face No. 4 Nebraska. The match is set for a 6 p.m. (MT) start.
