Stanford's Press Named a Women's Soccer Lowe's Senior Class Award Finalist

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD senior forward Christen Press was named one of 10 finalists for the women's soccer Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, which was announced Wednesday. The 10 finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 women's candidates that were announced in August.

A native of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., Press leads the nation in goals (14) and points (32). So far this season, she has broken the Stanford career scoring record with 155 points, tying the school all-time goals mark with 59. With 37 career assists, she is three shy of tying the all-time school assists record as well. Press is on the watch list for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy, given to college soccer's national player of the year and has led Stanford to a consensus No. 1 ranking and a 9-0-2 record.

Off the field, Press holds a 3.61 GPA in communications and was a member of the 2009 NSCAA/Adidas Women's College Soccer Scholar All-America first team. In the community she has helped teach soccer for to children, has volunteered to feed the homeless and helped organize the Theta Breakers Run for Children, a charity event that raises money for Child Advocates for Silicon Valley.

The Lowe's Senior CLASS Award is given to student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.

The finalists will be voted on nationwide by media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote via the Lowe's Senior CLASS award website through November 14.  The winner will be announced by Lowe's at the 2010 NCAA Women's College Cup in early December.
