Bergsma Voted Pac-10 Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - OREGON’s Alaina Bergsma was named Pac-10 Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 20-26, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. The redshirt sophomore outside hitter stepped up to carry the Ducks to their first home win over No. 7 WASHINGTON in 10 years and halt the Huskies’ perfect 36-set season win streak.

Against Washington, the Chandler, Ariz., native recorded season highs in kills (21), points (23) and hitting percentage (.559). The first-year Duck’s kill tally was a team season high while her hitting mark was tops among team performances of 15 kills or more. Coming into Saturday’s match, only one opposing hitter had posted more than 10 kills against the Huskies, and Bergsma nearly doubled that total. She also led the Oregon in blocks (4) and points for the first time this year. In the sweep of returning NCAA qualifier WASHINGTON STATE the night before, Bergsma led her team in kills for the first time this season, tallying 12.

It is Bergsma’s first career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and the 15th weekly recognition for Oregon all-time.

The Ducks continue Pac-10 play by traveling to Northern California. Oregon plays at No. 8 CALIFORNIA on Friday and at No. 1 STANFORD on Saturday.

Also Nominated: Tiffany Owens, ARIZ; Tarah Murrey, CAL; Mona Kressl, OSU; Lainey Gera, UCLA; Alix Klineman, Stanford; Alex Jupiter, USC.
