Stanford's Press Named Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- STANFORD senior forward Christen Press was named Pac-10 Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 21-27, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
In a 9-0 victory over Hawai’i on Thursday Press netted two goals on seven shots and also added one assist to bring her point total for the day to five and her career point total to 151, one short of the school record.
On Saturday in a key match between then-No. 2 Stanford and then-No. 3 Portland, the Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., native broke the all-time Cardinal scoring record on a goal that also served as the eventual game-winner in the 2-1 victory. The goal, coming off a magnificent chip to the far post in the 36th minute, gave Stanford a 2-0 lead and put Press at 153 points in her career, surpassing Sarah Rafanelli’s record of 152, set in 1993. The goal also brought Press within one of Rafanelli’s career-goal record of 59.
This marks the third-career Player of the Week honor for Press and brings Stanford to 29 honors all-time, the most of any Pac-10 team.
Next up for Press and the Cardinal is a home match on Sunday, Oct. 3 against Bay Area rival Santa Clara.
