Throughout the 2010 football season, Dave Razzano will be providing scouting reports on various Pac-10 student-athletes. He is a former NFL scout with more than 22 years of professional scouting experience with the San Francisco 49ers, St. Louis Rams and Arizona Cardinals under NFL coaches Bill Walsh, George Seifert, Chuck Knox and Dick Vermeil. He's been a part of five Super Bowls with three Super Bowl wins (49ers, 1989, 1990; Rams, 2000). This week: California tailback Shane Vereen.
Strengths: Outstanding lateral quickness. Very good acceleration through the line of scrimmage. Has the vision and run instincts to cut quickly to daylight when he sees a crease. Shifty and elusive in space. Possesses the speed to go the distance. Has strength to break arm tackles. Versatile player who catches the ball well out of the backfield and is also a productive kick off returner.
Weaknesses: Undersized back who is more of a situational player than a bell cow featured runner at the next level. Runs a little upright and will take some body shots. More of an outside threat than consistent inside producer. Lacks power to move piles in short yardage.
Gives the Cal Bears a similar run threat to last year's sensation Jahvid Best, now a Detroit Lion. Shane is small in stature yet extremely quick and fast with the ball in his hands. These types of runners are very dangerous to defend as they usually get stronger as the game progresses. He has three games to date of 150-plus yards rushing. You can hold him down for only so long until he breaks a long gainer. He gets to top-end speed in a hurry which allows him to get through small openings at the line of scrimmage and race to daylight. Teams need to game plan around stopping him as he can break a game open with explosive plays. This junior is one of the most dynamic players in the Pac-10, if not the entire country.
Vereen will be playing in this week's Pac-10 Game of the Week, as Cal travels to face USC. Watch highlights of Shane Vereen.
