The Apple Cup: Scouting The Quarterbacks

Jeff Tuel
Washington State / Quarterback
Ht. 6'3 Wt. 218

Good size and arm strength. Is accurate as a short passer. Throws a catchable tight spiral. Poised in the pocket. Take-charge player who knows how to audible. He is a good runner and also shows ability to throw on the move. Has a lot of upside at the position.

Has a slight hitch in his delivery. Will stare down primary target some. Lacks big time escape ability. Will force some deep throws into coverage.

Possesses a lot of positive qualities for the QB position. Just a sophomore who stands to improve the more he plays, which bodes well for the future of Cougar football. He is a stand-in-the-pocket passer with very good accuracy on the shorter routes. His delivery is a tad slow with an overhand hitch, but his ball placement is good and his velocity is impressive. Shows very good poise and doesn't seem rattled under heavy pressure. This player has a lot of tools to work with and the leadership required for the position. As the talent around him improves, his numbers should get considerably better. This is a good looking prospect.

Jake Locker
Washington / Quarterback
Ht. 6'3 Wt. 230

Outstanding overall athlete. Very good arm strength and accuracy on short/intermediate routes. Takes command and shows good leadership qualities. Definite run ability. Can escape pressure and throw on the move. Very tough and competitive player who will try to run over opponent rather than go out of bounds. Good production over a long period.

Can be inconsistent with accuracy, especially deep. Will lock on to primary target too long. Lacks some pocket poise and gets hurried under duress.

Locker is an exceptional athlete who can run as well as throw. Shows the arm strength to make every throw necessary on the pro level. He is best when moving outside the pocket and hitting targets on the move. Does get erratic some with deep ball placement but his underneath balls are usually on target. Dangerous with the ball in his hands in the open field as he has the speed to take it the distance at any time. Shows very good leadership qualities and command when on the field. Doesn't force many throws but will lock on at times to his initial target. Has some flaws to his game, but most are correctable. Possesses a ton of upside potential and has a bright future at the NFL level.
