Stanford Women Maintain No. 1 Ranking in TYR/CSCAA Poll
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The STANFORD women's swimming and diving team continues to hold the top ranking in the TYR/College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division I poll for December, leading four Pac-10 teams in the top 10 and five total. On the men's side, ARIZONA jumped three spots to No. 2 to lead four Conference teams in the top 10.
The Cardinal women finished first in 16 of 18 events to take the team title at the Arena Invitational in Long Beach, Calif., last month. No. 4 CALIFORNIA finished second in Long Beach and the Golden Bears also won their second-straight collegiate team title at the AT&T Short Course National Championships.
The fifth-ranked Women of Troy defeated both No. 7 Arizona and ARIZONA STATE in November dual meets. The Wildcats beat UCLA and then picked up several victories and NCAA automatic berths at the Texas Hall of Fame Invitational. The No. 22 Bruins defeated ASU in dual-meet action and then posted fast times at the Arena Invitational and Texas Invitational. The Sun Devils and OREGON STATE both received votes.
The Arizona men defeated No. 9 USC and also had an impressive showing at the Texas Invitational. The Wildcats rank only behind No. 1 Texas, and the teams will meet up for their annual dual meet at the end of January in Austin, Texas. The third-ranked Cardinal took three distance events at the Tri-Distance Meet with Cal and then won 12 of 18 events at the Arena Invitational.
The No. 4 Golden Bears won four individual events and two relay races at the Tri-Distance Meet. Cal and USC both had strong performances at Short Course Nationals. The Trojans also defeated Arizona State in dual-meet action. USC divers posted top scores in November as well. UC SANTA BARBARA, CAL POLY and Arizona State received votes in the poll.
