This Week in Pac-10 Softball

The Pac-10 celebrates the 2011 softball season as the 25th anniversary of women in sports with 123 NCAA women's team titles and an unrivaled 527 individual championships, the Pac-10 has a lauded heritage in women's sports, with softball playing a major part in that success. As we turn the page on the 2011 campaign this weekend, Pac-10 teams will play at various tournaments throughout the West. Arizona State hosts the Kajikawa Tournament and ARIZONA, CALIFORNIA, OREGON, OREGON STATE and STANFORD will be in Tempe to participate. UCLA hosts the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament in Los Angeles and WASHINGTON travels to Las Vegas for the Sport Co Kickoff Classic. Seven of the 10 Pac-10 squads are ranked and Arizona and UCLA begin the season ranked one-two in each poll. UCLA tops the USA TODAY/NFCA poll and Arizona takes the No. 1 spot in the ESPN/USA Softball poll. UCLA looks to defend its 2010 NCAA title and the Wildcats look to be right on the Bruins' heels after finishing as the 2010 runner-up. The Pac-10 boasts 12 players on the 2011 USA Softball Player of the Year Award watch list, including Oregon's Samantha Pappas, the 2010 Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year and Arizona's Kenzie Fowler, a 2010 Player of the Year Finalist, to name a few.
