Chambers, Henderson Named Pac-10 Softball Players of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- ARIZONA senior catcher Stacie Chambers was named Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week and CALIFORNIA sophomore pitcher Jolene Henderson was named Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 14-20, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Arizona's Chambers brought out the bat for the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., over the weekend, slugging 1.643 over five games, with 14 RBI and five home runs. In a career day against Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Friday, Chambers tied for second in Arizona history for RBI in a game with nine, as she bombed two grand slams and added an RBI single in a 12-4 victory. The Glendale, Ariz., native's nine RBI in the game ties her career-high. Chambers had a home run in four of the five games played over the weekend, as she batted .571.
Henderson was a force for the Bears in the circle over the weekend, pitching 14.0 innings for two-complete game wins, including a two-hit performance against then-No. 8 Missouri. On Friday against Missouri, the game was delayed because of rain, but not before the Elk Grove, Calif., native fanned six and allowed only one hit through five innings. The game was picked back up on Sunday, where she finished the 1-0 complete game shutout, allowing only one more hit and tallying eight strikeouts in seven innings. She then came back later in the day on Sunday to face UCSB, striking out seven and allowing only one run in a 2-1 victory. Over the weekend she limited the opposition to a .146 batting average. For the season, Henderson is 5-1, with 34 strikeouts and a 0.81 ERA over 35.0 innings pitched.
The honor marks the fourth career Player of the Week nod for Chambers and the Conference leading 131st all-time for Arizona. This is the first career Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor for Henderson and the 63rd all-time for California.
Next up for the Wildcats and the Golden Bears is a trip to Palm Springs, Calif, where they will begin action at the Cathedral City Classic on Feb. 25.
