USC's Poldma, ASU's James Named Tennis Players of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- USC senior Jaak Poldma and ARIZONA STATE sophomore Hannah James have been named Pac-10 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for Mar. 14-Mar. 20, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
USC's Poldma extended his singles win streak out to 15 straight to hold him undefeated in dual-match singles play with two more road wins last week. Ranked #41, the Tallin, Estonia, native pulled out a tense 10-point tiebreaker in the third to get the Trojans at 5-2 win over Florida State with his 6-3, 6-7 (8), 1-0 (11-9) victory over #76 Clint Bowles. Two days later, Poldma was up against Florida's #39 Sekou Bangoura at the No. 2 position, and the senior rolled through his opponent for a straight-set win that put the Trojans in position for the 4-3 win over the Gators. Poldma's dominating win over Bangoura avenged a loss in his first match of the season, where Bangoura managed a three-set win over Poldma at the Land Rover Napa Valley tournament. Poldma is now 25-3 overall in singles with a 15-0 mark in dual matches. No. 3 USC improved to 14-2 overall as a team with the two road wins.
A week after clinching the deciding match in ASU's upset victory over then-seventh ranked Cal, ASU's James once again played a key role in the Sun Devils come-from-behind victory over ninth ranked USC on the road. Down 0-3, Arizona State rallied back with the entire match riding on the outcome of the match-up between James and USC's Alison Ramos. The Birmingham, England, native took the first set 7-5, only to drop the second set 2-6. With the weight of the entire meet on her shoulders, James took the third set 6-4 to clinch the victory for ASU. The sophomore had previously triumphed in a similar scenario again Cal, beating Tayler Davis 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 to give ASU the victory.
This is Poldma's third all-time selection, second this season and the 20th overall for USC. The weekly honor is the first for James and the 10th all-time selection for the Sun Devils.
