USC's Sarmiento and Stanford's Burdette Named Pac-10 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- USC freshman Ray Sarmiento and STANFORD sophomore Mallory Burdette have been named Pac-10 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for Mar. 21-27, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.

USC freshman Ray Sarmiento picked up two big straight-set wins last week as the Trojans kept their win streak rolling  in the first weekend of Pac-10 play, earning two victories over No. 8 Stanford and No. 12 California. Playing at the No. 4 spot in singles action, #53 Sarmiento first topped Stanford's Denis Lin for the second time this season to help the Trojans make it back-to-back wins over the Cardinal to further avenge one of their two team losses this year. His win 6-2, 6-3 over Lin evened the score at 1-1 in the match against Stanford for a boost that helped USC to an eventual 4-2 victory.

The next day, the Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native turned around and notched another road win from his No. 4 spot, beating Cal's #119 Christoffer Konigsfeldt 6-4, 6-3 on the way to a 4-1 USC win over the Bears. With the two wins, Sarmiento improves to 23-7 overall and now holds a 12-2 dual match singles record in his first year as a Trojan. USC is16-2 and holds a nine-match winning streak as the Trojans now return home to host Oregon and Washington this week.

Stanford's Burdette went 4-0 in singles last week from the No. 2 spot. She defeated three nationally-ranked opponents  as the Cardinal won four matches over six days, including two commanding 6-1 wins at UCLA and USC to stay atop the Pac-10 standings at 4-0. At UCLA, the Jackson, Ga., native defeated #40 Noelle Hickey, 6-4, 6-2, 76 and then at USC, she defeated #25 Danielle Lao, 6-3, 6-3. Burdette also went 1-1 in doubles play with teammate Hilary Barte over the weekend, defeating UCLA's #17 duo of Dolehide/Remynse, 9-7. Burdette is now 18-4 overall and 12-2 in duals on the season. As a team, the Cardinal are 17-0 overall, having won 36 matches in a row dating back to last year. The Cardinal return home this weekend to host Arizona State on Friday and Arizona on Saturday.
