STANFORD, Calif. -- The University of Southern California tops a closely-packed leader board at the 2011 Pac-10 Men's Golf Championship after the first day's action which called for 36 holes of play at the Stanford Golf Course. The Trojans posted a team score of 9-over 709, followed by Oregon at 10-over 710, host Stanford was at 12-over 712, and UCLA at 13-over 713.

USC sophomore Martin Trainer carded a pair of two-under 68 rounds and found himself in a tie among individuals with Oregon State junior Alex Moore at 4-under 136 heading into Saturday's third round action. Moore had the day's lowest round, getting the better of the windy conditions, with a 5-under 65 in the second round.

Trainer, who hails from nearby Palo Alto, Calif., was one of five players to post a two-under 68 and claim the lead after the first round, along with Oregon junior Jack Paton, UCLA juniors Alex Kim and Gregor Main, and Washington State junior Trent Sanders.

"Martin has been really leading us the last few events, said USC coach Chris Zambri. It's great to have a guy who you can count on. He had a great day today and this is his home town and it's pretty special to have Martin lead the way."

"I think we did well. It was tough for everybody out there. I think we probably benefited by having the first tee times off the front and probably got to play in a little less wind early. A couple of keys to the way we played today was the start in second round on the difficult stretch on the golf course, then the way we came in with a hole-in-one and a couple of birdies," added Zambri.

USC freshman Jeffery Kang aced the 17th hole (185-yard par 3), and is currently tied for eighth with an even-par 140.

Third round play resumes tomorrow at 9 a.m.
