IRVING, Texas- University of Colorado senior Emily Hanenburg earned her fourth academic all-conference honor to lead the Buffs on the 2011 Academic All-Big 12 Track and Field team, announced by the conference Tuesday.
Hanenburg, a Colorado Springs, Colo. native, graduated last week with a bachelor's degree in studio art and Spanish. She is a four-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 first team and has never missed a semester on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll. Hanenburg has been a member of the Dean's List.
In total, the Buffs have 28 student-athletes who earned a spot on the team; 19 were named to the first team and nine were named to the second team.
Seniors Kevin Fasing, Laura Thweatt and Joi Windham each earned their third academic all-conference honor. Fasing graduated with a degree in integrative physiology and Thweatt earned a bachelor's in sociology. Windham finished her CU career with a degree in management.
Five other seniors earned their second honor on the academic team. Megan Burrell, Matthew McCathran and Max Van Dyke are on the first team for the second consecutive year and Richard Medina and Matt Tebo are making their second appearance on the second team. Senior Kirsten Wicks is a member of the first team for the first time in her career.
To qualify for the Academic All-Big 12 team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
Colorado will travel to the 15th Annual Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship May 13-15 at the John Jacob Track & Field Complex in Norman, Okla.
