First-Ever Pac-12 Volleyball POWs Announced
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.—OREGON'S Alaina Bergsma was named the Pac-12 Women's Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 22-28, while WASHINGTON players claimed two other weekly honors, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. UW's Bianca Rowland was voted the Defensive Player of the Week, while Krista Vansant was selected Freshman of the Week.
Weekly awards have been selected every week since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the first time the Pac-12 has announced an offensive and defensive selection, as well as a rookie honoree.
OREGON junior Alaina Bergsma (Chandler, Ariz.) led the Ducks to its first-ever win over a top-ranked opponent over the weekend, defeating No. 1 and four-time defending national champion Penn State, 3-1 (16-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-22), at the AVCA Showcase in University Park, Pa. The win also ended the Nittany Lions' 94-match home court winning streak, the longest ever in the sport. Bergsma led the team in kills (42, 4.67 kps) and points (44.5, 4.94 pps) over the two matches, which also included a 3-2 (26-24, 15-25, 25-22, 18-25, 10-15) loss to then-No. 12 Minnesota. She had 19 kills against the Lions, then followed up with 23 against the Golden Gophers to earn a spot on the six member all-tournament team.
WASHINGTON won the Long Beach State Mizuno Invitational over the weekend with the help of senior middle blocker Bianca Rowland (Lynnwood, Wash.) and freshman outside hitter Krista Vansant (Redlands, Calif.). Rowland led the UW defense, which limited its three opponents to 0.86 hitting percentage. She had 16 blocks, including a match-high nine against then-No. 22 Long Beach State, moving into the top 10 in career blocks in the UW record book.
In her first-collegiate outing, Vansant was named the Long Beach Mizuno Invitational Most Valuable Player after leading Washington to a 3-0 start. She did not make an error in the wins over Prairie View A&M and UMBC, then posted 12 kills and 11 digs for her first-career double-double against LBSU in the final match of the event while playing in front of a road crowd of about 1,800 fans. Vansant averaged a .333 hitting percentage, 2.30 digs per set, 0.90 blocks per set and 3.70 points per set.
It is the second Pac-12 weekly recognition of Bergsma's career and Oregon's 16th all-time. Rowland's selection is the first weekly nod of her career and Washington's 30th all-time. Vansant becomes the first-ever player to win the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honor.
The Ducks host Delaware on Tuesday, Aug. 30; then host a double-header with Liberty and American on Wednesday, Aug. 31. The Huskies are headed to the Northwest Challenge in Spokane, Wash., Friday and Saturday, Sept. 2 and 3.
