Buffs Suffer Tough Loss Against Siena

BRONX, N.Y. -  The University of Colorado volleyball team lost a heartbreaking five-set match against Siena College (26-24, 15-25, 23-25, 25-17, 13-15) on Friday night in the first match of the Rose Hill Classic at Fordham University.

The Buffs are now 3-2 overall while the Saints improved to 2-3.

Kerra Schroeder recorded 19 kills to lead CU; seven of those came in the fourth set where she hit .600 with just one error on 10 attacks. Overall Schroeder recorded a .240 hitting percentage with seven errors on 50 swings.

Nikki Lindow also reached double-digit kills for the Buffs, recording 10 kills in the match. Lindow also hit a team-high .346 with just one error on 26 attacks. Colorado outhit SC in the match, recording a .216 percentage versus SC's .194. Erin Stock handed out 22 assists for CU while Michelle Miller added 14.

The Buffs recorded 68 digs in the match, 23 of which came from Megan Beckwith, a season-best. Schroeder added 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the year. Lindow put up a career-best eight blocks, two solo and six assists, to lead CU at the net. Schroeder also recorded a pair of blocks.  

CU took a 10-3 lead in the first set before Siena called its first timeout. The Saints came back to tie the set up at 14-14 and even took the lead at 15-14, but the Buffs came back with four consecutive points to go back up 18-15. The Saints once again evened the score at 18. CU went up 24-21, but SC fought off the next three set points to tie the frame again at 24. The Buffs finished the set off with a kill from Schroeder and an ace from Miller.

Siena got out to a 9-4 lead in the second set and extended its lead to 19-11. The Buffs tried to get back into the game, but fell 15-25. They hit .161 while the Saints hit .353.

The third set was much closer although Siena won 25-23. CU was down 11-17 and came back to get within a point at 18-19. The Saints used a 3-0 run to take a 22-18 lead. The Buffs once again got within a point at 23-24, but SC finished it with a kill from Taylor Akana.

Colorado got out to a much better start in the fourth set, taking a 10-4 lead. The Buffs were able to hang on to that lead and won the set 25-17. CU hit a match-high .452 with 15 kills and just one error on 31 attacks and held the Saints to a .171 hitting percentage (13 kills and seven errors on 35 swings).

The Buffs got out to a 6-3 lead in the fifth set, but Siena came back to tie the score at 10. CU had a 13-12 lead, but the Saints took the next three points to finish the match 15-13. The Saints hit .435 with 10 kills on 23 errorless attacks, while CU hit .250 with six kills and two errors on 16 swings.

CU will play Albany (10 a.m.) and Fordham (5 p.m.) on Saturday, and St. John's (10 a.m.) on Sunday to wrap up the Rose Hill Classic.
