Bank Of The West Weekly Volleyball Honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.—OREGON's Alaina Bergsma was named the Bank of the West Pac-12 Women's Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week; CALIFORNIA's Robin Rostratter was selected the Defensive Player of the Week; and ARIZONA's Chloe Mathis was voted the Freshman of the Week, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. The weekly honors reflect performances for the week of Sept. 12-18.

Weekly awards have been selected every week since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. The offensive, defensive and freshman of the week honors are new for the 2011 campaign.

Earning offensive weekly honors for the second time this season, redshirt-junior outside hitter Alaina Bergsma (Chan-dler, Ariz.) paced the Ducks offensively in three victories last week, hitting .321 with a 5.20 kills, 0.90 blocks, 2.20 digs and 5.70 points per set average. She was even better in the opening weekend of Pac-12 action, hitting well above the team's average in the wins over Arizona (.353 hitting percentage) and Arizona State (.391hitting percentage). Against the Sun Devils, Bergsma added a career-high four blocks.

Junior defensive specialist Robin Rostratter (Carlsbad, Calif.) was instrumental in Cal's three wins last week, helping the Golden Bears begin Pac-12 play at 3-0 and preserve their No. 1 national ranking. Against rival and second-ranked STANFORD, she amassed a career-high 29 digs against the Cardinal attack. She followed up with strong performances versus Conference newcomers Colorado (23 digs) and Utah (17 digs). For the week, Rostratter averaged an impressive 6.90 dps.

Freshman Chloe Mathis (La Jolla, Calif.) led the Wildcats to their first Pac-12 win of the season, posting 57 assists against Oregon State. Under her direction, Arizona hit .280 in the match and she also contributed 11 digs. In the loss to then-No. 16 OREGON, Mathic had 16 assists and six digs.

It is the third-career Pac-12 weekly recognition for Bergsma and Oregon's 17th all-time. Rostratter earns the weekly nod for the first time in her career and it is the 29th citation for the Golden Bears. Mathis earns the Pac-12 Freshman of Week for the first time.

The Ducks, who move up to No. 15 in the AVCA Coaches poll this week, head to Colorado (Sept. 23) and Utah (Sept. 24). The Bears will have their ranking challenged this weekend at No. 12 USC on Friday and No. 7 UCLA on Saturday. The Wildcats host No. 4 Washington and Washington State on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
