Bank of the West Volleyball Weekly Honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — OREGON's Lauren Plum was named the Bank of the West Pac-12 Women's Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week; while CALIFORNIA's Shannon Hawari and Lillian Schonewise were voted Defensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. The weekly honors reflect performances for the week of Oct. 17-23.

Weekly awards have been selected every week since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. The offensive, defensive and freshman of the week honors are new for the 2011 campaign.

Sophomore Lauren Plum (Poway, Calif.) receives offensive weekly honors after leading the Ducks to an upset of then-No. 7 Washington, after also leading the team to a comeback victory over Washington State to open the weekend's action. Under Plum's direction, the UO offense posted the highest hitting mark by a UW foe (.283), dishing out 52 assists in three sets. The balanced attack featured four players with 10-plus kills, a first for Oregon in a three-set match. In the previous night against the Cougars, she had 45 assists, two aces and four blocks. She also added 10 digs for her first of two double-doubles on the week, posting 12 against the Huskies. Plum leads the league in assists (11.80 per set) and is ranked in the top-10 nationally in the category.

Junior Shannon Hawari (Plano, Texas) was a strong presence at the net in 3-0 sweeps of Arizona State and Arizona. Hawari had a career-high-tying eight blocks against Arizona State to help Cal outblock the Sun Devils, 13-7. Versus Arizona, Hawari once again led the Bears with seven blocks, also tying her season high with four digs in Tucson. Hawari also hit .260 over the two matches with 18 kills, 12 coming against the Wildcats.

With the Golden Bears battling injuries to key players, freshman outside hitter Lillian Schonewise amassed 17 kills over the two matches with a .464 hitting percentage and averaging 2.83 kills and 1.17 blocks per set. Against the Sun Devils, she hit .333 with five kills and four blocks. She followed up with 12 kills and a team-high .526 hitting performance against ASU in her first-career start.

Plum is the third Duck to earn offensive player of the week honors this season. It is the first weekly honor of her career. Hawari is one of three Cal players to receive defensive player of the week honors this season, and it is Hawari's first weekly honor of her career. Her teammate, Schonewise, collects the first weekly award of her career, as Cal garners its third Freshman of the Week honor and seventh total weekly honor of the season.

No. 16 Oregon hosts Utah and Colorado this weekend, as second-ranked California stays in Berkeley to take on No. 6 UCLA and No. 4 USC.
