Oregon Sweeps Bank of the West Weekly Honors
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Posting a pair of upsets over the weekend, OREGON swept the Bank of the West Pac-12 Volleyball Players of the Week. The Ducks' Lauren Plum was voted the Offensive Player of the Week, Haley Jacob was selected the Defensive Player of the Week and Liz Brenner was tabbed the Freshman of the Week, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. The weekly honors reflect performances for the week of Nov. 14-20.
It is the first time one team has swept the weekly awards. Weekly awards have been selected every week since the Con-ference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. The offensive, defensive and freshman of the week honors are new for the 2011 campaign.
Sophomore Lauren Plum (Poway, Calif.) directed the Oregon offense in road upsets over No. 5 Stanford and No. 3 Cal-ifornia, averaging 11.70 assists and 2.50 digs per set. She had 60 assists and 11 digs in the five-set victory against the Cardinal, helping UO to a .292 team hitting percentage, the highest Stanford has allowed an opponent this season. The win was the second ever for the Ducks in Palo Alto. Leading UO back from a 0-2 deficit, Plum had 57 assists and 14 digs, also adding seven kills and four aces in the comeback victory against Cal the following night.
Defensively, the Ducks were led by junior libero Haley Jacob (League City, Texas). Jacob was just two digs short of the program record (since rally scoring began in 2001), posting 35 digs in the win at Stanford and then had 21 against the Golden Bears. She averaged 5.60 digs per set, easily topping her season average of 4.16.
Freshman Liz Brenner (Portland, Ore.) was also an integral part of the win. In the team's second-ever win at Maples Pavilion, she bested all hitters with 31 kills with just three errors in 43 attempts for a 65.1 hitting percentage. The 31 kills tied for the most of any Pac-12 player this season. In the Ducks' comeback win at Cal, she had 13 kills and a sea-son-high four blocks. For the weekend, she averaged 4.40 kills, 0.70 blocks and 4.85 points per set, hitting 33.3 per-cent over the two matches.
It is the second-career weekly honor for Plum, both coming this season when she received offensive nods. Jacob's de-fensive honor is the first weekly nod of her career. The offensive and defensive selections are the 18th and 19th all-time for Oregon. Brenner is tabbed freshman of the week for the second time in three weeks.
The 13th-ranked Ducks wrap up the regular season with a pair of matchups against rival Oregon State on Nov. 22 and Nov. 25.
