Major Named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week
BOULDER - Junior linebacker Jon Major was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week Monday for his performance in the University of Colorado's final game of the 2011 season, a 17-14 win at Utah on Friday.
The Parker, Colo., native played in 57 of 58 defensive snaps and recorded nine tackles in CU's win, with two tackles for loss including one sack. He had three third down stops, one quarterback chase down and one touchdown saving tackle.
Major's two tackles for loss came in the game's final minute prior to Utah's attempt at a game-tying field goal. Utah gained a first down at the CU 22 with less than two minutes to play and on first down, Utah QB Jon Hayes was sacked by David Goldberg for a loss of five yards. Utah then called timeout with just 57 seconds to play. On second down, Major sacked Hayes for a loss of seven yards to bring up 3rd-and-22. CU was then offsides, but on the next play, 3rd-and-17, Major tackled RB Tauni Vakapuna for a loss of 2 yards to push Utah back to the CU 31-yard line.
Utah's Colem Peterson missed a 48-yard field goal that could have been from inside 40 yards without the two losses totaling nine yards by Major on the previous two plays. CU took possession with just :02 left on the clock, downed the ball and ended a 23-game road losing streak.
CU's defense limited Utah to just 39 yards of offense in the first half, the lowest total since Baylor had 39 yards in Waco in 1999, and the last time a CU defense held somebody to less than 39 yards was all the way back in 1992, when CU held Kansas State to just 16 total yards the entire game (32 in the first half, minus-16 in the second).
USC's Matt Barkley was named the offensive player of the week while California's Giorgio Travecchio was named the special teams player of the week. Barkley completed 35-of-42 passes for 423 yards and six touchdowns in a 50-0 win over UCLA and Travecchio connected on 4-of-4 field goals and 5-of-5 extra points for 17 points in Cal's 47-38 win over Arizona State.
