USC's Jupiter Named 2011 DI AVCA Player of the Year
San Antonio, Texas -- The American Volleyball Coaches Association is proud to announce that University of Southern California senior outside hitter Alex Jupiter has been selected as the 2011 AVCA Division I National Player of the Year. The award was presented this afternoon at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet presented by Zamst, which was held in San Antonio, Texas, as part of the 2011 AVCA Annual Convention.
Jupiter, born in Paris, France, was also named the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year after an incredible senior season in which she helped guide the Trojans to a 29-5 record and an appearance in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament. Jupiter also helped Southern Cal claim the first ever Pac-12 Conference Championship, the school's first conference title since 2003, after setting a Pac-12 record 20 wins in conference during the season. The team's fabulous regular season ended with the Trojans reaching the top spot in the AVCA Top-25 Coaches Poll.
The senior outside hitter has compiled 514 kills (4.47 kps), 360 digs (3.13 dps), 63 blocks (0.55 bps), and 57 service aces (0.50 saps) in 115 sets. According to last week's NCAA stats report, Jupiter is ranked sixth in the nation with an average of 5.33 points per set, and also led the Pac-12 with 5.39 points per set in conference play. In her final match of her career against Illinois in the NCAA Tournament's Semifinals, Jupiter nailed 32 kills and tallied 12 digs.
Through her illustrious four-year career in a Trojans uniform, Jupiter has notched 1,918 kills, a school record, and has also eclipsed the 1,000 mark in digs. She is now the top point scorer in school history after racking up 620 this season, pushing her career total to 2,255.
In 2010, she gained recognition as the AVCA National Player of the Week on two occasions and was also named an AVCA First-Team All-American, following her 2009 third-team selection. The senior was also named the Most Outstanding Player of the Honolulu Region of the NCAA Tournament this season in addition to being named to the regional All-Tournament team, her second and third tournament honors after being named to the Dayton regional All-Tournament team in 2010.
