Thacher, Scandalis Named Players of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — STANFORD senior Ryan Thacher and USC freshman Zoe Scandalis have been named Bank of the West Pac-12 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for January 16-22, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.

In just his second career match as the top singles competitor, Thacher rallied for a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 23 Tulsa's Japie De Klerk on Friday, bringing Stanford a thrilling win in the season opener for both teams. He swept his singles opponent on Saturday—Jose Hernandez of No. 20 North Carolina—with set scores of 6-0, 6-3. Thacher and freshman doubles partner John Morrissey posted an 8-6 victory over UNC's top doubles team of Brennan Boyajian and Oystein Steiro, giving the Cardinal the doubles points for a 5-2 defeat of UNC.

Scandalis and junior doubles partner Valeria Pulido posted an 8-2 win over No. 57 UC Irvine's Kat Facey and Franziska Goettsching on Friday for USC's first win of the day. Scandalis proceeded to shut out UC Irvine's Courtney Byron (6-0, 6-0) in her singles match, giving the freshman her fifth consecutive singles victory and 18th overall singles win.
