U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - The University of Colorado men's track and field team placed second, while the women took third at the Air Force Team Challenge on Saturday at Cadet Field House. Joe Morris, Eileen Gerhing, Jana Stolting, Martin Medina, Mark Jones and the women's mile relay earned top honors in their respective events.
Morris broke the 60-meter dash tape in 6.77 seconds. Morris won the first heat by .05 seconds, defeating Utah Valley's Allah Laryea-Akrong who finishing in 6.82. Shaw Gifford placed sixth overall, clocking a time of 6.97 after winning the second section. Morris also placed second in the 200, finishing in 21.41. Gifford improved from his 60 finish, this time taking fourth in 21.79. Kyle MacIntosh was sixth for the Buffs (21.92).
Gehring won the women's 400-meter dash after racing to a personal record of 56.17 in the first section of the race. Two other Buff racers scored in the 400; Brianne Beemer placed third (57.12) and Lindsy Mattson was sixth (57.37). MacIntosh was the runner-up in the men's 400, finishing with a PR of his own at 48.59. Matt Butcher also picked up points for the Buffs, placing seventh (49.97) and Blake Reimer took eighth (50.01).
The women's mile relay raced to the third-fastest time in school history, clocking a time of 3:50.00. The relay, made up of Mattson, Emily Elliott, Gehring and Bridget Sweeney defeated Utah Valley's relay by just overall 3 seconds (3:53.03). The men's relay (Butcher, Morris, Gifford and Reimer) placed second overall, finishing in 3:20.31, just barely behind CSU's relay which finished in 3:20.04.
Colorado topped the charts in the 3,000-meter run as well, winning the men's and women's individual titles. Stolting won the women's race in 10:27.53 and Rachel Viger took third overall, crossing the finish in 10:41.57. The men took an impressive five of the top six places in the 3k. Medina won the race in 8:53.95, Ryan Savercook earned second (8:57.65) and Dillon Shije placed third (9:03.42). Garrett Ward took fifth-place (9:09.99) and Jerome Perkins placed sixth (9:10.81)
For the second straight week, Mark Jones won the men's high jump. Jones recorded a season-best jump of 7 feet, 0.50 inches (2.15 meters), clearing the height on his third attempt. The women also earned points for the team score in the high jump. Katie Dreher placed fourth after clearing 5-07 and Alyssa Frank tied for sixth after clearing 5-05.
Abrianna Torres tied for third overall in the long jump after leaping 18-09.75, a personal best. Brittany Lewis placed fifth with a mark of 18-01.75 and Genny Mayden took eighth (17-08). Emily Hunsucker led CU in the shot put, placing seventh overall with a toss of 44-09.
CU also did well in the men's 800, taking second, sixth and eighth. Matt Biegner placed second, finishing in 1:53.21 (a personal best) and freshman Connor Winter was sixth, crossing the finish in 1:56.49. Steve Kasica added the final points for CU in the 800, taking eighth-place overall in 1:57.93. Nikki Look placed sixth in the women's 800, finishing in 2:25.68 and picking up three points for the team score.
Catrina McAlister led CU in the mile run, finishing second (5:10.15) and Courtney Bouchet added to the team score by placing fifth (5:15.21). On the men's side Hugh Dowdy was the only Buff to score in the mile. He was sixth after finishing in 4:22.81.
The Buffs will be back in action Feb. 3 and 4 at the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, N.M.
