Hanfmann, Anderson Named Players of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — USC freshman Yannick Hanfmann and UCLA redshirt freshman Robin Anderson have been named Bank of the West Pac-12 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for Feb. 13-19, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.

Hanfmann helped propel the Trojans to their first appearance in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships title match with three dominating straight-set singles wins and two doubles upset victories to date in Charlottesville, Va. The freshman teamed up with Steve Johnson at the No. 1 doubles position and followed up a suspended match in the Round of 16 clash with No. 20 Tennessee by taking down two higher-ranked opponents to key doubles-point wins for USC against No. 10 Duke in the quarterfinals and No. 4 Georgia in the semis. No. 28-ranked Hanfmann/Johnson beat Duke's No. 13-ranked pair and Georgia's No. 7-ranked duo. In singles, Hanfmann plowed through his opponents with a trio of straight-set wins, losing only nine total games in those three victories. Hanfmann enters Monday's ITA championship match with a 21-5 overall singles record and 8-1 dual-match mark. He and Johnson are 9-1 overall in doubles and a perfect 6-0 in dual-match play.

Anderson was named the Most Outstanding Player at the ITA National Team Indoors after helping UCLA to the school's first-ever title at the event. She clinched the team's 4-0 upset over No. 3 Duke last Monday, downing seventh-ranked Beatrice Capra, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 at the No. 1 singles position. The win avenged a three-set loss to Capra in the consolation final at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November. Anderson posted yet another top 20 victory against No. 5 Baylor on Saturday, this time beating No. 17 Diana Nakic, 6-2, 6-2 in UCLA's 4-0 win in Waco, Texas. With her two wins on the week, Anderson improved to 8-0 in dual matches and 19-5 overall on the season. She moved up to No. 6 in this week's ITA Singles Rankings. Anderson has also been instrumental in helping UCLA to its best start in 14 years. The last time the Bruins started a season 10-0 was in 1998.
