Men's Golf: Buffs In 15th Through One Round

Feb 26, 2012

PALM DESERT, Calif. - The University of Colorado men's golf team was in 15th place after the first round here Saturday in the fourth annual Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, presented by Cleveland Golf, however second round play was suspended due to darkness.

No. 12 UNLV leads with a 9-under 279, one better than second-ranked Auburn.  The Buffaloes, ranked No. 66, recorded an 11-over par 299 score in the morning round, which took almost six hours to play.  With 24 teams in the field, it made completing two rounds nearly impossible; all of Colorado's players had two holes remaining to play.

Junior Derek Fribbs sand freshman David Oraee were pacing the Buffs through one round with 1-over par 73s on the 7,305-yard, par-72 Classic Club course layout.  The Buffs were 6-over as a team in the second round when play was called: senior Kevin Kring (76 in the first round) was even, Oraee and junior Jason Burstyn (77) were 1-over, and Fribbs and junior Beau Schoolcraft (78) were 4-over; the top four scores count toward team scoring.

"Our scores don't indicate how many good things we're seeing out there," head coach Roy Edwards said.  "We were a little bit sloppy, but the reality is with what the weather has been back home, it's because we haven't been able to be outside much in the last three weeks.  I told the guys just to relax and have fun, and they're coming around."

Play will start at 8:30 a.m. MST Sunday and be continuous until three full rounds are completed.
