Stanford Leads After First Night

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. — STANFORD is two points ahead of rival CALIFORNIA after each team won a relay in the first night of competition at the Pac-12 Championships at East Los Angeles College, coming in at 74 and 72, respectively.

The Golden Bears won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:25.09 to repeat as champions of the event. The winning relay team was made up of senior Mathias Gydesen, senior Nolan Koon, junior Tom Shields and sophomore Shayne Fleming. STANFORD came in second with a time of 1:25.46 and ARIZONA placed third in 1:25.60.

The Cardinal won the 800-yard freestyle relay in 6:18.99, repeating as champions in the event. The winning relay team was made up of freshman Dave Nolan, senior Rob Andrews, freshman Stephen Thomas and senior David Mosko. USC was second in 6:19.71 and Cal was close behind at 6:20.20. All three teams swam automatic NCAA qualifying times.

The 2012 Pac-12 Championships continue Thursday, March 1 with preliminaries at 11 a.m. PT and finals at 6 p.m. PT. Tomorrow's events are the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay.
