Two Teams Receive NCAA Tournament Bids

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Two Pac-12 women's basketball teams earned bids to the 2011 Division I NCAA Tournament, the NCAA Women's Basketball Committee announced today with the release of the 64-team field. STANFORD was selected one of the four No. 1 seeds in the postseason event.

Ranked No. 2 in both major polls, the Cardinal (31-1, 18-0) is the No. 1 seed in the Fresno Regional after capturing its sixth-straight Pac-12 Tournament title and 11th-consecutive regular-season crown. Stanford has won a school-record 28-straight games, with its only loss of the season coming back on Nov. 21. Led by Hall of Fame head coach and the 2012 John R. Wooden Pac-12 Coach of the Year Tara VanDerveer, the Cardinal are looking to make a fifth-consecutive trip to the NCAA Final Four. Stanford travels to Norfolk, Va., where it will face 16th-seeded Hampton (26-4, 17-1). The winner of that game will face the winner of the #8 West Virginia (23-9, 11-5)-#9 Texas (18-13, 8-10) matchup in the second round. Stanford is making its 26th trip to the NCAA Tournament, tied for the third-most appearances in NCAA Division I history.

Pac-12 Tournament and regular-season runner-up CALIFORNIA (24-9, 13-5) is the 8th seed of the Raleigh Regional. Under the direction of first-year head coach Lindsay Gottlieb, the Golden Bears make a return to the "Big Dance" after missing out the last two seasons. Cal travels to Notre Dame to face ninth-seeded Iowa (19-11, 11-5). It is Cal's eighth appearance in the tournament all-time and fifth since 2006. The winner of that first-round game will face the winner of No. 1-seeded Fighting Irish (30-3, 15-1) and 16th-seed Liberty (24-8, 16-2).

The Pac-12 has had at least two teams in the NCAA Tournament every year since the first year of the event in 1982. The NCAA Final Four will be held at the Pepsi Center in Denver on April 1 and 3.
