Nguyen, Juricova Voted Players of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — USC senior Daniel Nguyen and CALIFORNIA senior Jana Juricova have been named Bank of the West Pac-12 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for March 19-25, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.

Nguyen contributed a powerful performance in USC's sixth win over a top-10 team this season. After teaming up with Ray Sarmiento at the No. 2 doubles position for a dominating 8-2 win over Florida's No. 26 Carleton/Newman, Nguyen went on to win his ninth-straight singles match with a gutsy comeback effort against No. 56 Nassim Slilam at the No. 3 position. Nguyen lost his first set against Slilam before rallying back and getting up a break in the second. In the 10-point tiebreaker to decide the third set, Nguyen rolled to a 10-2 win to wrap up the victory, hauling in his 24th singles win over the season and making his dual-match singles record 13-2 with his 10th consecutive victory. Nguyen's win helped USC notch a 6-1 win over No. 10 Florida, improving the Trojans to 18-0 on the year. USC has now won 38-straight matches dating back to last season.

No. 6 Juricova returned to full-time action for the first time in a month and went undefeated in four matches. She reclaimed her spot atop the lineup and dropped just two games in four sets to earn her 21st and 22nd singles wins. First, she defeated Tatsiana Kapshai of Sacramento State, 6-0, 6-0; then she took out No. 43-ranked Liudmila Vasilieva of Washington State, 6-1, 6-1, for her ninth consecutive victory. In doubles matches, she teamed with freshman Zsofi Susanyi to earn an 8-5 win against Clarisse Baca and Maria Meliuk of Sac State, 8-5, to help the Bears secure the doubles point for the 14th time this year. The 38th-ranked Cal duo then took out WSU's Ksenia Googe and Andjela Kankaras, 8-0, for their ninth-straight win together. The pair is now 12-1 in all matches and 7-0 in duals. Juricova's effort helped the Bears to their best conference start since 2007 when the team also went 5-0. Cal's seven-match winning streak is also the longest since an 11-match streak took the Bears to the NCAA championship match in 2008.
