PULLMAN, Wash. -- Battling through windy conditions, ARIZONA STATE claimed the early lead after the first round of the 2012 Pac-12 Women's Golf Championships at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club on the campus of Washington State University. The Sun Devils finished with an 11-over 299 and hold a five-stroke lead over defending national champion UCLA.

Arizona State senior Giulia Molinaro was the only Pac-12 golfer to finish under par on Friday, carding a 1-under 71. After shooting even-par on the front nine holes, Molinaro recorded birdies on the 10th, 11th and 17th holes. She holds a three-shot lead over COLORADO's Jennifer Coleman, UCLA's Erynne Lee and USC's Lisa McCloskey, who all finished 2-over 74.

"In Europe we play a lot of links courses and the weather can be bad," said Molinaro, who hails from Villorba, Italy. "I'm used to figuring out how to score. On the third or fourth hole, I told our assistant coach, Missy, that today was going to be a good day. I felt I was understanding the course well."

Sun Devil head coach Melissa Luellen praised Molinaro's ability to play well in tough conditions. "When it gets bad, she gets excited," Luellen said. "She was really patient. She was a little disappointed she bogeyed her last hole, but was also happy she birdied 17. She has a lot of confidence."

In addition to Molinaro, ASU's remaining three scorers were among the nine golfers tied for seventh place. Noemi Jimenez, Justine Lee and Daniela Ordonez all shot a 4-over 76.

UCLA sits in second with a 16-over 304, while 2011 Pac-10 Champion USC and CALIFORNIA are tied for third after both posting a 306 (+18). OREGON rounds out the top five at one stroke behind with a 307 (+19).

The second round of the tournament resumes Saturday with Oregon and Colorado taking the first tee at 8:30 a.m., followed by USC and Cal at 9:10 a.m. and ASU and UCLA at 9:50 a.m. Washington State and Arizona will tee off from the 10th tee at 8:46 a.m. Washington, Oregon State and Stanford follow at 9:26 a.m.
