Getting Pac-12 Networks on TV
The next time you are channel surfing at home, think about this: in order for each one of those hundreds of channels to reach your home, an agreement had to be reached between the programmer and the cable, satellite, or phone company that brings it to your home.
These deals – called “carriage agreements” – are complex.
In order to reach a carriage agreement, the two sides need to deal with all kinds of technical questions like where the channel will be placed in the line-up; whether the channel will be offered in HD or SD; whether it will be available to viewers across the country or just in certain areas. The list goes on.
And, of course, these points are all part of the negotiation between the programmer and cable, satellite, or phone company.
These negotiations are challenging even for programmers that have been around for years. But for a brand new venture like the Pac-12 Networks, it can be even tougher. After all, we don’t have historical viewing data to guide us. So we need to find common ground with our partners about the audience we believe this network can attract.
Negotiations are always tough. But the fact is that the cable, satellite and phone companies that we are talking to are genuinely excited about this new enterprise. They see the strength of our content across the board. They understand that there are millions of Pac-12 fans nationwide – and those fans really, really want to see more of our sports and stories about our student-athletes.
That’s why more than 30 cable companies that collectively reach over 48 million Americans have already signed up to carry Pac-12 Networks. That’s a testament to our fans, alums, universities and, above all, our student-athletes.
Of course, our work is not done. We want to make the Pac-12 Networks available for every fan in the country. Right now, we are in the middle of productive conversations with a whole range of companies, including DirecTV and Dish, the leading satellite providers.
Our goal is to get broad distribution for Pac-12 fans and, with the clock ticking until that first kickoff of the college football season, we are going to be working tirelessly to get those deals done quickly. We will definitely keep you posted on any new developments.
