Buffs Lose Battle Against No. 2 Washington

Oct 7, 2012

BOULDER- The University of Colorado volleyball team battled but fell to the No. 2 Washington Huskies (25-17, 25-16, 25-22) on Sunday afternoon at the Coors Events Center.

Alexis Austin led CU for the second match this weekend with 11 kills. Ana Pantovic was second on the team with seven kills. Kelsey English and Emily Alexis each recorded four kills in the effort for CU.

"It was a big challenge today," Austin said. "I had two big blockers, sometimes three. It was harder to find a point and know how to score and everything. So, it wasn't bad, it was just a good experience to have to know how to do that."

As a team, the Buffs recorded 32 kills but also had 24 errors to hit just .092. The Huskies, one of the nation's top block teams, posted 12.5 blocks. Kylin Munoz accounted for eight blocks (one solo and seven assists) for UW and Amanda Gil added seven block assists. UW recorded 35 kills and had just 12 errors in the win and hit .324.

The Huskies, improved to 15-0 (6-0 Pac-12) and are the only team in the NCAA that has not lost this season. The Buffs fell to 12-6 overall, 2-4 in the conference.

"Washington is up there with some of the best that I've seen so far, simply because they're balanced," coach Liz Kritza said. "They're experienced; they have offensive weapons on both points. They're in the 6-2 offense, which affords them to score at a higher pace. Clearly, they're one of the nation's top blocking teams. They out-blocked us 3-1 and they have sizable players that are well-disciplined and they have a good skill set. They did a good job today."

CU fell behind early in the first set but rallied back to even the score at 14-14, forcing the Huskies to call a timeout. UW used a 5-2 run out of the break to take a 19-16 lead. After a CU timeout, the Huskies continued to add to their lead with three straight points before the Buffs sided-out (22-17). Washington took the ball back on the next possession and finished the set 25-17.

UW took an early 6-1 lead against the Buffs to start the second set. The Huskies increased their lead to 14-4, but the Buffs continued to battle and got the score to 16-9. UW didn't let up and finished the set 25-16.

The Huskies also took the lead to start the third set, going up 10-5. The Buffs chipped away at UW's lead and got within two points at 17-15, forcing UW to use a timeout. CU kept it close, but the Huskies were able to keep a little distance between them and the Buffs and finished the set 25-22.

CU finished this weekend 1-1, defeating Washington State on Friday night 3-0 before losing to UW on Sunday. The Buffs continue their homestand next weekend with a pair of matches against Arizona State and Arizona. They will host ASU on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. and Arizona on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $5 (adults) and $2 (13 and under) for each match at or by calling 303-49-BUFFS.
