USC sweeps Pac-12 tennis player of the week honors
By the Pac-12 Conference
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - USC junior Emilio Gomez and USC sophomore Giuliana Olmos have been named Pac-12 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for January 21-27, the Conference Office announced Tuesday.
Gomez held strong onto his number-one singles position as USC hosted and won the ITA Kick-off weekend. Gomez won in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2 against San Diego State's Derek Siddiqui and in straight sets against Fresno State's Reid DeLaubenfels (6-2, 6-3). He helped lead USC to a 3-0 lead. He continued his strength into his doubles performance where he and teammate Eric Johnson beat the Fresno State pair of MacNeil and Quiroz 8-1. The victory helped qualify USC for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships next month.
Olmos hit the court for the first time this season with a near shutout against Akron's Angelina Jogarusia where she won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Olmos' victory was just one of six for USC against Akron as the Trojans swept the Zips 6-0. Olmos teamed up with Danielle Lao in the doubles against UC Irvine for an 8-1 win that put USC up 1-0 in the match. She continued her singles play against UC Irvine to record another shutout in her second-set beating Franziska Goettsching 6-3, 6-0.
