Roundup: An upset and two thrillers

Feb 28, 2013

[[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"3534","attributes":{}}]]What else did you expect from a night in college hoops? The night got started with a red-hot shooting USC team knocking off No. 11 Arizona 89-78. I tell ya- Bob Cantu has done a phenomenal job since taking over, and his team is full of grinders. I'd go to battle with those guys any day of the week.   [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"3542","attributes":{}}]]Of course, 89 points is not a good look defensively. Neither is allowing the opponent to shoot 61 percent from the floor. So yeah- Arizona's defense is a cause for concern in the loss to USC.     [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"3539","attributes":{}}]]Then we had a nailbiter on The Farm. After 40 minutes, Colorado eked out a 65-63 victory over the Stanford Cardinal. With the win, the Buffs boosted their tournament résumé.     [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"3536","attributes":{}}]]You hate to lose a game like this if you're Stanford, as Dwight Powell's game-tying dunk was a fraction too late (credit Sean Kent for the highlight). This team has lost so many close games this year- fouling a player at half court with less than a second to play in a tie game, missing a dunk at the buzzer, losing by one point in a game where an opposing guy swished a 37-footer to beat the halftime buzzer... tough luck for the Card.   [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"3535","attributes":{}}]]The night came to a close inside the friendly confines of Pauley Pavilion, where three freshmen led UCLA to a 79-74 victory in overtime over Arizona State. Jordan Adams, Kyle Anderson and Shabazz Muhammad combined to score 64 points to slither past the Sun Devils.   [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"3540","attributes":{}}]]We have a couple of games tonight, starting with Utah at Cal.  The question on the mind of the friendly writers at California Golden Blogs is is Allen Crabbe the Pac-12 Player of the Year? Of course they think so. If he is, Crabbe would be the third Golden Bear in the last four years to win the honor (Jerome Randle in 2010 and Jorge Gutierrez in 2012, and by the way, Gutierrez is killing it in the NBA D-League right now with the Canton Charge).   [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"3756","attributes":{}}]]With the Utes heading into their final three regular season games, expect to see an expanded rotation from Utah and look for more minutes for a guy like Dakarai Tucker. The Pac-12's Coach K wants to get his team prepared for a potential four-games-in-four-days run at the 'ship. There was also some big NFL news yesterday concerning Utah, as the 49ers agreed to trade Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs.   [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"3538","attributes":{}}]]The night will end up in Eugene with Oregon hosting Oregon State. Yesterday we linked to The Oregonian's Senior Day story for E.J. Singler, so now it's time to give The Register-Guard a crack at an E.J. Singler feature. He is about to make his 108th consecutive start for the Fighting Ducks.   [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"3537","attributes":{}}]]If you love defensive rebounding as much as I do, then you'll love the battle between Eric Moreland and Arsalan Kazemi tonight. Kazemi is first in the nation in defensive rebounding percentage, while Moreland is sixth. I just licked my lips.     [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"3533","attributes":{}}]]The men's basketball edition of the Apple Cup won't go down for a second time this season until Saturday in Seattle, but that didn't stop Lorenzo Romar from promising that there will be no quit in his Huskies. And, after beating Arizona State on the road in their last game, you can't really disagree with him.   [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"3532","attributes":{}}]]It has been a rough year for Washington State, and despite being third in the conference in scoring, Brock Motum has suffered through a tough season.     [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"3541","attributes":{}}]]Almost a strictly-basketball roundup today, but since the Sun Devils suffered a tough overtime loss on the road that pretty much makes it Pac-12 Tournament-or-bust for the Surgin' Sendeks, let's instead talk about Arizona State softball coming through in the clutch. This team has been used to blowing opponents out this year, but the Forks won in their last at-bat twice against Portland State this past weekend (and run-ruled 'em the other two games). ASU softball- still undefeated through 16 games.
