Mar 26, 2013

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Michael Kim of CALIFORNIA has been named the Pac-12 Men’s Golfer of the Month for October, the Pac-12 announced today. Kim, a sophomore from Del Mar, Calif., led the Golden Bears to three wins last month as he posted top six finishes in each event, including top honors at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational. California opened the season victorious at the Pac-12 Preview in Portland, Ore. (Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club) as Kim tied for sixth among individuals with a 6-under 210, carding rounds of 71-69-70. Kim tied for fifth at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational with a 9-under 204 (64-71-69) as the Bears won their fourth event of the season. He then closed out the month of October with a 4-under 212 (67-72-73) to claim individual honors at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, but it took a clutch second shot out of a fairway bunker on the 18th hole of the third and final round to save par and hang on to a one-stroke individual win and two-shot team victory. Kim’s October performance moved him up in the latest Golfweek individual rankings, where he currently sits third behind fellow Pac-12 golfers Patrick Rodgers of Stanford and Cheng-Tsung Pan of Washington. California has now won all five events it has played during the fall season and has taken a share of the title in 11 of its last 19 events dating back to last season. The Gifford Intercollegiate at CordeValle is the final action of the fall season for several Pac-12 teams as Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, and USC compete in the three-day event from Nov. 5-7. All remaining league teams resume action in late January or early February. Also nominated for golfer of the month honors were Trent Redfern, Sr., ARIZONA; Jon Rahm Rodriguez, Fr., ARIZONA STATE; Patrick Rodgers, So., STANFORD; Pontus Widegren, Sr., UCLA; Yi Keun Chang, Fr., USC; Trevor Simsby, Jr., WASHINGTON.
