UCLA's Wruck sets Pac-12 record, earns weekly honor

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference outdoor track and field athlete of the week honors for the week of April 8-14, 2013:

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week: JOE MORRIS, COLORADO (Sr., Golden, Colo.). Joe Morris recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the Colorado Invitational, both times coming in second to former Buff Jeremy Dodson. Dodson won the 100 in 10.30, but Morris was right on his tail as he finished in 10.42. The 200 was also very close with Dodson winning in 20.73 and Morris placing second in 21.01. Morris’ 100-meter time ranks fifth in the Pac-12, and his 200-meter time is third in the league.

Women’s Track Athlete of the Week: BREA BUCHANAN, UCLA (So., Chino Hills, Calif.). Brea Buchanan had a solid performance at the 27th annual Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, claiming the women's 100-meter hurdles title with a meet-record and personal-best mark of 13.17. Coming into the meet, Buchanan was tied for 12th nationally in the event (13.26), but after shaving off almost a full tenth of a second, she has moved into the top 10 nationally, coming in at No. 8.

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week: JULIAN WRUCK, UCLA (RS-Jr., Brisbane Queensland, Australia). The NCAA's top-seeded discus thrower Julian Wruck claimed the men’s discus throw title at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney. Representing Queensland, his mark of 217-7/66.32m in the event bested the Pac-12 record, which he set on April 6. The annual competition serves as the primary qualification for Olympic Games, putting Wruck in a position for a chance at a second-consecutive Olympic bid. It is the third time in four weeks Wruck has claimed the weekly honor.

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week: DESTANAE HOWERTON-DAVIS, UTAH (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.). At the Utah Spring Classic, Destanae Howerton-Davis broke the school record in the shot put, recording a mark of 48-10/14.88m to win the event. Her performance ranks 12th in the Pac-12 this season. Howerton-Davis continued that momentum into the second day to break her second school record of the weekend. At the Wildcat Invitational, she won the discus by posting another school-record mark of 166-6/50.75m, which ranks 11th in the Pac-12 this season.
