Bruins play home run derby in Tucson

Apr 19, 2013

Hillenbrand Stadium turned into a launching pad Friday night in the midst of the ballpark's 20th anniversary weekend. Unfortunately for Arizona fans, it was the Bruins that broke out the big sticks in a 13-3 victory. Sophomore Ally Carda got the offensive explosion going, hitting a solo shot to center field in the first inning. She wouldn't waste any time repeating that feat, sending a two-run homer over the hitter's backdrop in the second inning.

Five other Bruin hitters, including Stephany LaRosa, B.B. Bates, Brittany Moeai, Mysha Sataraka and Gracie Goulder, would reach the seats Friday afternoon. The seven UCLA longballs tied a single-game school record. Carda and Bates both hit critical homers in Thursday's series opener, a 10-inning loss that fittingly ended  on a walk-off homerun. The Bruins and 'Cats will slug it out in the rubber match of the series Saturday at 6 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Networks.
