Day 2 recap: USC holds lead heading into final round

VALENCIA, Calif. - USC freshman Annie Park notched a two-under 70 as the Trojans remained ahead of team leader boards after the second round of the 2013 Pac-12 Women’s Golf Championships at Valencia Country Club in Valencia, Calif. USC heads into Wednesday’s final round with a five-under 571, 11 strokes ahead of second-place UCLA. “I felt like we got off to a slow start today,” USC head coach Andrea Gaston said. “We were definitely losing some ground, and I was a bit surprised at the end of the day, that we ended up 11 shots [ahead of UCLA]... [I am] certainly happy that we were able to finish fairly strong.” Park, who shot a four-under 70 on Monday, is tied for first with Stanford freshman Mariah Stackhouse. Both posted 140 after two days of competition. Park finished the day with four birdies, including two straight on holes four and five, shooting two-under 70. “Today I was making more shots,” said the Levittown, New York native. “I had more chances from 15 feet and in. I didn’t make as much putts as yesterday, yesterday I made more putts.” Stackhouse, who finished one-over 73 Monday, carded a 67 (-5) in the second round. Colorado's Jennifer Coleman and USC’s Sophia Popov are tied for third as both posted 141 after round two. UCLA remains in second place with a four-over 292, and Washington sits in third after posting a round of three-over 291. Arizona, the only team to finish under par today, is in fourth place after shooting a four-under 284. Arizona State, which carded a 295 (+7), rounds out the top five.
