Arizona's Newman, Stanford's Appel named Pac-12 players of the week

By the Pac-12 Conference

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Arizona freshman shortstop Kevin Newman has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and Stanford senior right-handed pitcher Mark Appel has been tabbed Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for May 20-26, the Conference office announced Monday.

Newman capped a sensational freshman season by leading the Wildcats to a three-game sweep of USC. The Poway, Calif., native went 5-for-12 (.417) at the plate with five runs scored and nine runs batted for the series. He also walked once, was hit by a pitch, stole two bases and did not commit an error while racking up 18 assists on the weekend. In the series opener on Friday, Newman went 1-for-4 with two runs batted in before scoring the game-winning run after he was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the 10th inning. On Saturday, Newman accounted for half of Arizona's runs in an 18-4 win. He went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and collected a career-high six RBI. He closed the series on Sunday with a 1-for-3 day at the plate that included a double, a run scored and an RBI. Over the three games, Newman hit .800 (4-for-5) with runners in scoring position. Five of his nine runs batted in came with two outs. For the season, Newman batted .336 and ranked sixth in the league for base hits (73) and eighth in runs batted in (42).

This is Newman's first career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and Arizona's 60th all-time selection.

Appel racked up nine strikeouts in 8.0 innings of a 2-1 victory over UCLA on Friday night to become the Cardinal's all-time strikeout leader (372). The Austin, Texas, native allowed three hits, issued a pair of walks and conceded one run in his final collegiate start and improved to 10-4 on the season. He set the tone early, needing just 10 pitches to strike out the side in the opening stanza, and never looked back. It was the 25th time in the last 29 starts the righty has lasted at least seven frames to move his career total to 377.2 innings pitched, good for fourth in program history. Appel leads the Pac-12 and ranks second in the nation with 130 punch outs, and his is 2.12 ERA ranks fourth in the Conference.

This is Appel's third Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week nod of the season and the fifth of his career. Cardinal pitchers have won the award a league-best 80 times overall.
