Roundup: Roberto Nelson wants to win at everything

Jul 4, 2013

Happy 4th of July, y'all. May your day be filled with illegal fireworks and Pac-12 links.

Another great Oregon State offseason Q&A from Lindsay Schnell. This time she talks with Roberto Nelson about the new practice facility, ultimate frisbee and AAU basketball. Competitive dude, it sounds like. You can also learn about his placement on the first-team all-beer league, as sponsored by Craig Robinson.

New Brooklyn Nets leader Jason Kidd held his first practice as a head coach as he gets his guys ready for the Orlando Summer League.

While we're on the subject... As Summer League rosters get announced across The Association, here's a name that should bring back some recent memories: former Duck Michael Dunigan will be playing on the Miami HEAT Summer League squad. He played two years in Eugene before opting to turn pro, playing all over the world the last couple of seasons (and yes, HEAT is all caps, if you read the team's press releases. Next on my docket is writing out The King's name as such: LeBron JAMES). Other former Pac-12ers Larry Drew II and Dewayne Dedmon (Orlando Summer League only) will be Dunigan's teammates for the 305.

Continuing on with the subject, Brock Motum will suit up with the Philadelphia 76ers in the Orlando Pro Summer League.  Hopefully he can coax his way on to a Vegas squad as well.

He may have only spent a year in Tucson, but ex-Wildcat Grant Jerrett says Oklahoma City feels like UA.

This is the kind of news I like to hear: Steve Sarkisian confirmed that the Huskies will use chrome helmets this season. As for the chrome helmet, here's a pic of it. Very nice; I can get used to this Adam Jude feller (though of course, he made the roundup plenty of times last fall for his work with The Oregonian).

Harrowing story here about Colorado fullback Jordan Murphy being thankful for a chance to play. He was in Theater 9 at Aurora's Century 16 when the mass shooting occurred last summer. Luckily, he was not injured despite being shot at.

Here are five questions with Arizona State safety Alden Darby. Also linked in that article is a YouTube video of Darby's emotional story, produced a few years back.

Apparently it's not too early for the SB Nation fellas to think about the 2014 NFL Draft, so here is their write-up on David Yankey's 2014 NFL Draft preseason scouting report.

Welcome back to Westwood, sir: John Henry Johnson, Jr. is the new UCLA women's track and field head coach. The Bruin alum spent the past 19 years at USC under Ron Allice, working closely with All-American sprinters like Bryshon Nellum in Troy and being named the USTFCCCA National Men's Assistant Coach of the Year this season.

El Pac-12 handed out its Tom Hansen Conference Medal Winners yesterday, and quarterback Matt Barkley and rowing captain Melanie Grindle won the honor for USC. The award is handed out to senior student-athletes and is named after the former commissioner of the Pac-10.

'Tis the time of year for collegiate baseball summer leagues, and Utah's TJ Bennett was named the SCCBL Hitter of the Month for June after hitting .369 for May and June as a member of the Palm Springs Power. Not a bad place to play summer ball- a lil' hot, though.
